Peace remains elusive for Macondo despite the signing of the Neerlandia treaty, which should have guaranteed an armistice. Meanwhile, Fernanda del Carpio arrives in the town and marries Aureliano Segundo, while his twin brother Jose Arcadio must find his own path. Finally, when a railroad is built, business interests grow in Macondo, leading to the town’s eventual destruction.
